In Turks and Caicos, the water does the work.
Which catamaran actually reaches the far cays. Whether the clear kayak earns its price. What a golf cart really costs on Grand Turk. Every tour in the islands, reviewed.
A Turks and Caicos day begins where the sand stops.
A catamaran to the outer cays, a glass-hulled kayak through the mangroves, a reef you can stand up beside, a cart with a full tank. Pick the shape of the day, then book the right one.
The Caicos boat day: how far out do you want to go?
Every boat charter →
Half a day gets you the Grace Bay coral heads and a sandbar to stand on. A full day reaches the empty cays with lunch cooked on the beach. A private boat goes wherever the wind lets it.

Coral heads and back before lunch
Out past the Bight to the reef, two or three stops on the coral, gear on the boat and the beach chairs still where you left them.
Providenciales is where this water got famous.
Twelve miles of Grace Bay, a barrier reef a few hundred metres off the sand, and a marina full of boats heading somewhere better. Almost every trip in the islands leaves from here.
The tours everyone in Turks and Caicos ends up on.

The mangroves behind Provo are the quietest hour on the island.
Glass-hulled kayaks over eighteen inches of water, juvenile sharks and rays passing underneath, a drone overhead if you want the photographs. The channels behind Leeward stay flat on the days the north shore will not.

Every tour on the site by price, from a cart for the afternoon to a boat with your name on it for the day.
Golf carts, the sightseeing tram, an hour on a jet ski and the shore-side snorkel runs.
The classic half day: reef trips, catamaran sails, the mangrove kayak run, iguanas and a sandbar.
Grand Turk still looks like the Caribbean did in 1970.
Salt ponds, wild donkeys asleep in the road, a lighthouse at the north end and Cockburn Town’s Bermudian shopfronts fading gently. Take a cart, drive the whole island before lunch, and be over the wall by the afternoon.

Three things you can only do in Turks and Caicos.
Beaches and reefs run the length of the Caribbean. Glass kayaks over the Leeward flats, the rock iguanas of Little Water Cay and a reef that stops dead in two thousand metres of blue belong to this bank alone.

The Clear Kayak
The transparent kayak became a Turks and Caicos product before it was anywhere else, because the water behind Leeward is shallow, glass-flat and lit from below by white sand. You paddle over rays, baby lemon sharks and turtle grass with nothing between you and them. Most operators now send a drone up as well, which is why half the photographs you have seen of this country were taken from one of these boats.

Little Water Cay
Rock iguanas live on a handful of uninhabited cays off Providenciales and nowhere else on earth. Little Water Cay carries a few thousand of them, protected since 1999, with raised boardwalks so the burrows stay intact. Boats stop here on the way to the sandbar; the iguanas walk straight up to the planks and wait, entirely unbothered.

The Wall
The barrier reef runs the length of the north shore, close enough to swim to from Grace Bay, and then it simply stops: the shelf ends and the seabed drops thousands of metres into open ocean. Snorkellers get the shallow half — elkhorn coral, parrotfish, the odd turtle — and the blue edge beyond it, which is the part nobody forgets.

When the wind turns, Turks and Caicos moves leeward.
The Christmas winds blow hard from December to February and the north shore goes short and choppy for days at a time. The answer is always the sheltered side: the mangrove channels behind Leeward Going Through, the flat green water of Chalk Sound, the cuts where the kayaks and the paddleboards still go out while the reef boats sit it out.
Turks and Caicos keeps its best hour for the end of the day.

Most of the islands can be arranged from your hotel the night before. These cannot. Small fleets, single boats and a few slots a day decide them, and the good ones go weeks out.
- 01Drive GDT – Golf Cart RentalsBoth islands run on carts and the rental fleets are small. Cruise days clear them out entirely.
- 02Clear Kayak Photoshoot in Turks and Caicos Islands ProvidencialesSessions are timed to the light and the tide, so there are only a few each day.
- 034-Hour Catamaran Sail and Snorkel Tour from Grace BayA handful of catamarans work Grace Bay and high season fills them long before you land.
- 048HR Catch and Grill in Turks and Caicos IslandsOne boat, one trip a day, and the crew cooks what you land. There is no second sitting.
